The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won't be able to see them. You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan's home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into. Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on...

Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.

Still, the discoveries won't happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul's supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.

    Key Features

    1. Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.

    2. Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan's disappearance -- and the fate of his family.

    3. Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.

    4. Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

I wanted to love this game but...
I started this game with high hopes of a great game play experience, coupled with stunning visuals.

The graphics are fantastic, and I really enjoyed wandering through the various areas of the world.

Story though, was a little lacking. I couldn't find myself really caring too much about the characters. I got them confused at points and playing the scenes out of order didn't really help with that.

Which leads me to my final, and most important gripe. The game has glitches.... quite a few. At one point, the story text kept appearing on my screen when I activated a cut scene. I either had to watch the scene in darkness, with the story on top, or hit space to hide it and consequently, skip the cut scene.

Not being able to save the game was also frustrating. I found myself a couple of times, leaving the game, hoping the auto save feature had kicked in, only to find that I lost entire sections of the game, forcing me to revisit it all over again.

The final nail in the coffin, was the ending, or where the ending was supposed to be at least. I spent ages going through the various stories.... when I found the final game scene, I found out that I had missed one small piece of the game. I went back, completed the section I had missed, and made my way back to the final scene, or at least where the final scene USED to be. The area was now dark and I could no longer get into the final room to complete the game. I had completed all the stories, but could not view the final cut scene. The only way for me to officially complete the game is to start all over again - After viewing the final cut scene online, I was left feeling completely underwhelmed - the story really wasn't fully explained. Ultimately, I won't be playing the game over, only to watch this inconclusive story come to an end.

I really wanted to love this game... such a shame.

    Atmosphere !
Best looking game I ever seen. Really beautiful photorealistic textures, detailed outdoor graphics and nice effects.

The story is interesting and the atmosphere is immersive.

I really recommend to play he game during the night with headphones.

DEEP ATMOSPHERE WITH A GOOD STORY
The game is beautiful that makes your go everywhere to see awesome sceneries, but that's not all, you go everywhere because you can feel like a true detective and want to know what has happened.

I would recommend to play this game in the afternoon, just to go deeper and enjoy the game much better

    Beautiful countryside, Darkly disturbing Story
The game is beautiful to look at, with nearly photorealistic textures and shadows brushing the world that is fully realized. As you explore the locations scattered about the area you learn of a murder on the train tracks and this starts the game off on its journey. The game is relatively HUD free outside of interacting with objects or items, helping my identify the world around me; an important touch, because the mechanics used to solve mysteries is unique and familiar after the first one I solved. One of the best ways the story put me into the shoes of Prospero is how he thinks about the objects as I examined them, in the form of floating words that hang in the air above the object. As words floated past me, a single one sometimes remained suspended and I saw multiple copies floating in a cloud until I centered the words into one copy. That is the only handholding that the game gave me: these word clouds point in the proper direction, but not where.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter needs to be experienced by gamers because of the great example of storytelling presented for us to absorb and think about. It doesn’t take long to explore (roughly four and a half hours) and you’ll want to revisit it a few times to make sure you experienced everything. Small glitches do occur off and on, but these are never game ending or so persistent that you can’t play it properly. The haunting story urges you to keep going forward and that is one thing that I’ve missed in recent games, a story that makes you want to finish it while, paradoxically, not rushing to finish it. The game is not slow by any means, but I kept stopping to take screenshots of the landscapes I was walking through and I loved how real it felt. From the mud to the birds in the distance The Astronauts have crafted one of the best story driven games.

    Best Looking Game On PC.
This game has parts during the story where it looks better than real life. What else do I need to say?

The story is interesting enough, but most of the time you will be very immersed in the beautiful world, looking at nature, and then snapping out of it to find your next objective. Take your time through this game!
